If not for Yvonne’s immediate response, critical thinking skills, and extensive nursing experience, the patient could have coded.
A patient suddenly had chest pain and was shivering in obvious signs of distress. He was a cardio case. Yvonne called the CNA to do vitals while she rushed to give the patient Morphine IV. On the way to the med room, she asked for the charge nurse to call cardiology directly as there was no time for a MERT. The patient ended up in the cath lab and then placed on a balloon pump and was eventually scheduled for a CABG. If not for Yvonne’s immediate response, critical thinking skills, and extensive nursing experience, the patient could have coded. She was able to delegate tasks appropriately and was able to mobilize her resources.
