Dayalis laminated a legal sheet of paper and came back with a dry erase marker to start communicating with the patient and his significant other.
Dayalis is one of our Endoscopy Pre-op Nurses and she has so many wonderful traits but yesterday stood out to me not only as her manager, but as a colleague with a hearing impairment. On this given day, Dayalis was assigned to a patient who was deaf and required a live sign language interpreter. Unfortunately, the request for the sign language interpreter did not make it to the correct department(s) as would normally occur allowing the Endo team to proactively prepare for the patient's visit. Although this may have seemed like an obstacle to the patient's visit, it was just another situation to Dayalis impelling her ingenuity to go into motion to ensure she was able to communicate with her patient and his spouse who was also hearing impaired. Dayalis took quick action to meet the needs of her patient, she immediately informed the Charge Nurse and this NM of the situation and communicated the patient would need a Video Cyracom interpreter from Bio-Med. During the time the equipment was ordered and delivered, Dayalis laminated a legal sheet of paper and came back with a dry erase marker to start communicating with the patient and his significant other. It was during this time this NM contacted patient relations and was quickly able to retrieve the clear masks which would allow the patient to read his caregiver's lips in addition to using the video sign language interpreter. Once this NM arrived with the masks, I gave one to Dayalis and without hesitation, she immediately figured out how to wear it and replaced her surgical mask with the new one. This greatly improved the patient's demeanor, and he was smiling from ear to ear as he was now able to communicate through his eyes to her mouth to interpret her questions and provide feedback. The entire Endo team who was caring for the patient was given clear masks to use, and this made such a difference in the patient's experience. As someone who has a hearing impairment, it brought great comfort in watching Dayalis go above and beyond to make a difference in this one situation. Knowing that TGH provides the many translation services including video sign language and now clear masks is such an extraordinary way to bring comfort to someone who already struggles outside of having a procedure. This remarkable feat of not only Dayalis, but the entire Endoscopy team endowed the commitment to "defining medicine" and why we continue to give such great care and attention to everyone in our community. Dayalis truly is a special nurse, colleague, and valued team member.
