She checked on me, spoke to me, and tried to be the nurse patients deserve in these moments.
After being admitted to CCH for struggles with an adrenal health condition and severe back pain, I was moved up to the 2nd floor. Spending my first night of admission in the ER, I was lacking sleep when I was finally moved to a room. Once I arrived to my room, I fell asleep and remember waking to meet my new nurse, Susan. My issue was when I opened my eyes, my pain immediately spiked. I was informed she would be down to give me my meds as soon as they were allowed (1 hour). When she arrived to me, I was in massive tears. In that hour, my pain had taken over my body. She spoke kindly to me. She understood my situation and worked quickly to help with my IV meds. This helped a bit, but the pain was still high for unknown reasons. She checked on me, spoke to me, and tried to be the nurse patients deserve in these moments. Most nurses give meds and no longer care to check on you. Susan is the exact opposite. Being someone who worked in the medical field myself, I’m aware of how things work on both sides. When my illness worsened, I went from worker to patient. I quickly realized if you don’t understand the field, the patient is often left un-advocated for. It became obvious as my pain worsened that Susan is someone who will be the advocate her patients deserve. She reached out to doctors, and when my “med” background brain did not understand a situation, she took the time to talk to me for a few minutes until I understood better. It’s rare when a patient knows their health situation and is reliant on a nurse or doctor to be truthful or there for their patient. I am always so pleased to see nurses like Susan who go out of their way for you, no matter your age. Hospitals need more nurses like her. I so often see a nurse walk in, give meds, walk back out and barely speak to the patient. Susan is worthy of this award.
