Carrie understands the uniqueness of the patient population she oversees and exhibits empathy and compassion during her visits.
In 2016, Carrie started as our educator, focusing on improving the delivery of care we provide to our patients and aligning our chemotherapy administration practices with national standards. Carrie has since transitioned to the role of our manager, but has not lost touch with the need for working closely with her staff.
As a nurse leader, Carrie is regularly available to consult with staff needs and concerns, maintaining confidentiality and trust. She pushes us to actively resolve problems, promotes critical thinking, and is always open to hearing new ideas. For example, when I brought a concern to her related to repeated infusion alarms with a specific chemotherapy, Carrie encouraged me to consult resources like the Oncology Nursing Society to see if other hospitals have this issue. After some research, I found a device attachment that significantly reduces the incidence of these alarms and brought the information to her. Carrie was immediately receptive to the idea and involved other departments including Pharmacy and Supply Management to begin the investigation into the acquisition of the product. We are currently working on a process to incorporate this device into our practice in hopes to improve alarm fatigue and increase patient satisfaction.
I am always impressed by Carrie’s ability to organize and multitask in her role, which is extremely important for being an effective manager. Carrie is frequently seen making rounds on the unit, talking with patients and family members, and addressing their concerns. She understands the uniqueness of the patient population she oversees and exhibits empathy and compassion during her visits.
When emergencies arise on the unit, she is always available to assist in whatever way is necessary. For example, when a patient expectantly coded and passed away, Carrie was active in assisting the nursing staff both emotionally and physically. She encouraged the staff members involved with the situation to step away to get some air, and sat with the family to listen to and grieve with them until a chaplain could arrive. While it was a very difficult day for many, her involvement helped to ease some of the burden on her staff. Carrie is always advocating for her employees to be proactive with acknowledging and managing mental health needs, and readily provides resources to ease the stress that comes with being an oncology nurse.
While Carrie may represent 7 Schiedt in the manager role, she supports our unit as a leader, confidant, advocate, educator, resource, and friend. She is always seeking ways to improve the unit for the better, including volunteering to trial new programs like the “No One Dies Alone” pilot program and furthering integration with the outpatient center. She displays a passion for oncology nursing and supports her team both physically and emotionally, which passes on to our patients. Carrie Marvill is the embodiment of a DAISY Nurse Leader.
