Michael took time to help her navigate through the critical steps needed to keep that patient alive.
We had a very busy day in the ICU and while there were not very many actual ICU patients, there was a lot of activity. We have a very young ICU staff, and on this particular Monday, almost the entire ICU was under three years of ICU experience. As the charge nurse, there was a fair amount of social issues going on for social workers, case managers and myself to work through. This day we had five RNs on the floor for 10 patients. Everyone had two patients each. One nurse had one very sick ICU patient, ventilated and actively bleeding – very unstable. Michael took time to help her navigate through the critical steps needed to keep that patient alive. When the patient needed more pressors and became necessary to be a 1:1 RN patient, Michael took over her other patient, flexing to three patients (out of turn) to allow his co-worker to focus on the needs of the critically sick patient. Michael then continued to be the backup for her as she cared for the ICU crashing patient. He even facilitated her breaks and helped her take the patient to CT while maxed on four pressors. This allowed me, as charge, to try and find family for the patient. I felt confident knowing that Michael was helping his co-worker and I could focus on finding family. He continued to care for his three patients and be a resource for the rest of the floor while I was occupied doing social/care management research to find next of kin. Michael is always willing to step in and help out our team and will often be found doing things in the best interest of the patients. I was so grateful for his help and flexibility during a stressful day.
