She not only ensures I have the medical support needed but also takes the time to listen to my concerns, especially during times I get emotional about my disease.
Approximately 3 years ago I was diagnosed with Marginal Zone Lymphoma, which is a service-connected cancer. I just turned 60 and this type of cancer does not have a cure and my life expectancy has been shortened. I am under the care of both Dana Farber and the Worcester VA.
For the past two years, Worcester VA nurse Christina Lavallee has been providing me outstanding care. Christina is a one-of-a-kind nurse. Christina is very thorough and her attention to detail is second to none. Christina makes me feel like I am her number one patient. She not only ensures I have the medical support needed but also takes the time to listen to my concerns, especially during times I get emotional about my disease.
Because of my cancer treatments, I was not able to build up any Covid antibodies even after three doses of the vaccine. During my monthly visits with Christina, I would express how concerned I was about getting Covid under my condition. About three weeks ago I tested positive for Covid. Because of my condition, I really struggled with the virus to the point I needed to get the monoclonal antibody infusion from Dana Farber.
As soon I tested positive, I reached out to Christina and she took immediate steps to provide me assistance. I especially struggled with my oxygen levels. Christina worked with the doctor to provide me with a nebulizer and albuterol and cough medicine. She diligently called me every day to check on my progress. Every time I spoke with Christina, she gave me the support and strength I needed to fight the virus.
I know that her compassion and skills as a nurse saved my life. I am so lucky to have Christina in my life. She is an Extraordinary Nurse and is deserving of this award.
