Meg has worked for Nebraska Medicine for 37 years. Her first job here was in Environmental Services. She has had many different roles on many different units and departments within the organization. I have no doubt she excelled in all those positions. She leads by example by being an active member in multiple committees: Manger Representative for Nurse Practice Council, Magnet Committee, Inpatient Nursing Dashboard Committee, Chairperson BMC Code Blue Committee, Organizational Acute Care Emergency Response Committee, CAUTI/CLABSI Steering Committee, CAUTI Subcommittee, Joint Commission Organizational Meetings.

Meg is not just our manager; she is a member of our team. When she became the manager of our ICU at Bellevue, 4.5 years ago, she brought the team concept with her. When she refers to the nurses and techs, it is always “My Team”. She is invested in us. She cares about each and every one of us, and she shows it every day.

During my nursing career, I have always worked night shift. I have never really known my nurse manager like I know Meg. She makes herself visible, even for night shift. I find that very respectable. When Meg comes on the unit, there is no mistake. (If it’s before 6 am, it’s because I’m “shushing” her to not wake anyone up!) She walks in with a big smile and makes a point to touch base with each person. Her positivity and smile are infectious.

Aside from being too loud to work on night shift, she is a great role model with her friendly, down-to-earth demeanor and positive attitude. She is always brainstorming with us to improve our patient outcomes on the unit. Our DVM board takes center stage in our breakroom. She supports us when we excel and when we have opportunity to improve (she never refers to it in a negative way). When there is opportunity, she is the first one there, motivating us to improve our outcomes. Meg truly cares about the patients and her staff. This is not just a job for her. She realizes an “outcome” is not just a number on a chart. At the end of the day, it means that a patient had a positive, healing experience under our care. As far as the part of that patient experience that cannot be measured… she respects and praises us for all those special moments too. You can often find Meg bragging about her team and telling stories about special moments that happen on our unit. We are a better unit for having Meg as our Manager.
