Heather went above and beyond to help a family member whose provider suggested an expensive treatment. She does not work in that department, but Heather was helping out and noticed a message that was sitting for a long period of time. The provider wanted my family member to try this medication, as she has tried several others without success. However, the treatment was cost prohibitive. Heather took this very difficult and time-consuming message and worked through getting assistance to get this treatment approved. Heather did not need to take this message knowing it was time-consuming and not her regular department’s patient; however, she displayed the Mayo values and took it on and followed through the next day, even when she was not helping this department to ensure my family member received this treatment and would know the process. She even took the time out of her busy schedule to explain what the current and future state is to ensure my family member can continue to receive this medication. If it wasn't for Heather being a patient's advocate, we would still be waiting for a nurse to take the time to help us navigate this med issue that we have been having for the past four months.
