"My mom is having chest pains this morning. She says it feels like something is laying on her chest, but thought it might be gas pain." This is the MyChart message that was received at 8:10 am from a (cancer patient). Stephanie saw this message and called the patient by 8:09 am. She quickly and calmly assessed the patient and advised her to go to the emergency room immediately or call 911. She also quickly updated the clinical team. Stephanie then proceeded to continue to call and follow up with the patient and her family members to ensure that she was getting emergency care. There was some confusion in the patient’s home about who in the family was available and some patient reluctance to be evaluated as the patient felt this may be just gas pains. Stephanie made five or six calls to the family to make sure there was a minimal delay in the patient’s care. She was very poised, calm, and kind in working with the patient to ensure they understood the importance of the emergency evaluation. She continued to follow up every 10 minutes to ensure the patient was moving forward as discussed with getting help. The patient had an (event) upon arrival at the ED. Stephanie’s quick response along with her calm demeanor and persistence saved this patient’s life.
