This is long overdue, and I apologize for the delay, but better now than never. Back in early July, my grandma was taken to our ED via EMS after collapsing at home. Luckily, I was here at work and able to rush downstairs and meet her when she arrived. Hunter came right in and got to work getting her settled and assessed. He worked quickly and efficiently while also precepting/teaching a new grad nurse. He ensured my grandma was comfortable and explained everything he was doing.
Soon afterwards, there was cause for concern about her hemodynamic status and he immediately called for the provider to come into the room. Hunter called CT scan to alert them of the STAT order and ask when he could bring her over. A few minutes later I heard him call back to follow-up—he explained the urgency of his request and advocated for her to get scanned ASAP.
The provider read the scan as soon as it was available and called in the cardiac surgery team. Before we knew it, she was whisked away to the OR to repair her aortic dissection. She made it through surgery and, after a week or two in the ICU, a few weeks on the stepdown unit, a few weeks in the rehab unit, she is now back at home under the care of a home health agency. I’m telling you, the quick responses and excellent care she received in the ED truly saved her life.
As a nurse myself, I’ll admit that I’m quick to be critical of other health care providers; however, there was really nothing more I could have asked of them. I am beyond grateful and appreciative. Hunter, you rock! Thanks from the bottom of my heart.
