Peyton came to Riley early last year and hit the ground running in the CVICU. She came with great experience and quickly began to care for some of the most difficult and complicated patients such as those with Berlin machines. She never complained and even on the most stressful and emotional days, she excelled for her patients and families alike.
She is also an incredible team member and always notices when someone else needs help. She never has to be asked to jump in. Peyton simply does the work even if it is not allocated to her specifically. Since I began working in the CVICU, shortly after Peyton arrived, I have looked up to her and I continuously strive to be as amazing as a nurse that she is. She makes our team better, she cares deeply for her patients and she is a constant light when at work and at the bedside.
She cared for a particular patient that was very difficult and sad. Most of our team knew that this patient would not survive but the family felt that they could not give up. In those situations, it can be very distressing to care for a patient that you know is suffering needlessly. Peyton cared for this patient and family for months and I know that was incredibly difficult for her emotionally. However, she knew that this family trusted her and felt comfortable with her so she continued to be there for them day in and day out at the bedside through the worst days of this family's life. Although that patient did pass away, I know that they will never forget Peyton and the care and love she showed both to their child and the family as a whole. Peyton exemplifies the best of us and I hope I can be just like her when I "grow up."
