While a patient in the Bariatric Unit at St. Vincent Carmel, I had the opportunity to have Ashely as my nurse. It was a night shift, after I had scans earlier that day, looking for a reason or reasons why I was still so uncomfortable after two previous surgeries. She was very punctual when giving me my meds. I was having a very hard time getting comfortable but Ashley was very patient with me. Ashley was very attentive any time my button was pressed and always had a positive attitude. She mentioned some meditation and breathing podcasts to try to help me manage my pain and anxiety.

It seemed like forever while waiting to see the doctor the next morning and I was becoming very anxious. Ashley made a lavender spray to help calm me and peppermint oil to help with nausea I was experiencing. She also looked for ways to make me smile. While talking, we realized we both have a great fascination for the Broadway Show, Hamilton. A discussion on how money could be made to go see “Hamilton” when it comes to town kept my mind off my discomfort, making the night better. Sometimes it is just being present when needed. Ashley exemplifies what a nurse should be; kind, compassionate, and caring. Always looking for ways to make sure the patient is comfortable, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.
