Mia was very calm and had an excellent bedside manner while explaining the plan of care.
For 2 months there was a young patient on our unit who had just received a life-changing diagnosis and came close to dying several times. During that time Mia was his nurse a total of 6 times. Her first time caring for him was on a day the patient became agitated and ended up in restraints. He also had to have a dobhoff placed. The family was very anxious and distraught about his change in mental status. Mia advocated for an MRI for the patient, which was then ordered, alleviating some of the family’s worries. Throughout the day, the patient’s parents and fiancé were crying at the state of their loved one. Mia was very calm and had an excellent bedside manner while explaining the plan of care. She was also very proactive in tracking down specialists to speak in depth to the family about imaging and lab results. After that day, the family would often come up to the desk to request Mia to be the nurse for the next day if possible. For Valentine’s Day, they brought all the nurses food but made sure Mia got a dozen roses and a Teddy bear. Eventually, the patient became well enough to discharge and was able to walk the halls and have a normal conversations with everyone. He didn’t remember most of the staffs’ names but he did remember Mia’s name. Mia is a DASIY Nurse for her dedication to providing the best care possible to this patient.
