I want to start by saying that I myself am a nurse at UNMH. I feel like throughout the past few years I have questioned my reason for being a nurse, am I even helping my patients? It has been a hard few years for nurses; staffing issues, burnout, and uncertainty. A few days ago, I was on the other side, as a patient. I arrived to the SRMC ED alone and afraid. Once I was taken back to a room, my nurse Meisha was quick to assess and she was proactive with my care. I truly felt like I was in good hands from the beginning of my ED visit. Not only was she knowledgeable, but her presence alone was also comforting. Meisha stayed with me and even when she left the room she would check in with me frequently, I felt like she really cared and that as long as she was there nothing bad would happen. I feel better now but the experience I had with Meisha, the doctor, and the rest of the SRMC team will stay with me for years to come! I feel like my passion for bedside care has been reignited after my experience and I realize what a difference compassionate care can make for our patients during their worst moments.
