Tyler helped us to see that situation in a better light and reminded us how amazing it is to work for an organization that refused to close its doors to the community when it needed us the most.
Tyler has been an absolutely amazing nurse manager and a blessing to all of our staff on MICU since taking on his role as our nurse manager in October of 2021. Transitioning into this role during the pandemic speaks volumes for anyone, but Tyler made such an impact during this time. Saying he is anything short of incredible is an understatement.
Since taking over as our manager, the culture of our unit has completely changed. At the time that Tyler came into this role, the majority of our staff were either already planning to leave, or they were actively looking for another job. While I'm sure this was partially due to burn out since this was at the height of the pandemic, I think it is truly incredible that Tyler was able to have such an impact on staff morale during what was an incredibly challenging time to work in healthcare, especially in the ICU. His leadership during this time was nothing short of exemplary. I can specifically remember the staff being frustrated that we were continuing to open overflow ICUs to accept COVID patients when other local hospitals closed their doors. Tyler helped us to see that situation in a better light and reminded us how amazing it is to work for an organization that refused to close its doors to the community when it needed us the most. He led by example to help us see that resiliency during this incredibly difficult time was something we should be proud of. Since that time, not only has our staff retention been incredible but we have staff from multiple other units asking to come work on MICU. This is beyond remarkable, especially since we were in the height of the pandemic when Tyler took over this position. Tyler is too humble to admit that he is the reason for this, but when you talk to the many staff on our unit that have come to us over these past two years, they will tell you that he was a major reason for their transition into our department. Additionally, if you were to ask many of the staff that were here prior to Tyler assuming the role of our manager I am sure they would tell you that he is the biggest reason we have decided to continue working on MICU even though the last couple of years have been some of the most challenging times we've ever worked.
Our morale was incredibly low when Tyler became our manager and now that couldn't be farther from the truth. This is evidenced in many ways, including the amount of MICU staff that participate in UBC. From my understanding, we have more staff involved in our UBC than any other unit in the hospital. One of many reasons for this is Tyler's amazing ability to lead and how he empowers others to be leaders on the unit. We know that our voices are always heard when we bring something to Tyler's attention. We are empowered to promote positive change on the unit and amongst each other. Tyler is excellent at leading by example.
Recently, I was in charge during a very difficult and lengthy code. Tyler jumped right in to help with compressions-which to him was no big deal, but to us meant the world. I've never seen a nurse manager jump in to help like this. He is always actively rounding on the unit and is always actively seeking out ways to help, even if that means getting his hands dirty. While this may not sound like much to others, I cannot express enough how much that means to those of us working at the bedside. Actions such as these remind us that we are never alone and we can always count on him to support us when we need it the most. In addition to all of the above, Tyler led our move to 8MHC seamlessly. As exciting as opening this new unit is, it is also quite stressful. Tyler made this transition feel easy which speaks volumes about his incredible leadership abilities. As if all of the above isn't enough-Tyler does all of this while staying active in the Navy and continuing his education (he is currently working on his 2nd master's degree). We are beyond grateful to have Tyler as our manager.

Tyler is an excellent supervisor. He always makes time for the staff's concerns and questions, and he is often on the floor solving problems and lending a helping hand. In the past couple of months, as we've transitioned to MH 8th floor, he's been the solid and steady leader that we needed. In the past week, as we've moved, he's been putting out fires all over the unit, meeting with dozens of people, and literally grabbing extra supplies for the RNs as they need them. His great attitude inspires the whole staff. I never hear anyone speak poorly of Tyler. We all respect and admire him. He's an amazing nurse and a wonderful person to work under.
