I feel Jennifer deserves The DAISY Award for going above and beyond in helping a difficult, young patient undergoing drug withdrawal. Unfortunately, this patient was a young male who was admitted for withdrawal symptoms, and once admitted was attempting to sign out against medical advice. When Jen became aware of the situation, she recognized how important it was for the patient to stay and get treated in the hospital, and how the patient would be at extreme risk of overdose and death should he leave the hospital.

Jen showed the utmost compassion towards this patient, though he was being disrespectful towards her, because she truly wanted what was best for him. She did her best to convey to the patient that he was loved and able to get better despite his past mistakes and applauded him for coming into the hospital. She gently explained to him that going through the withdrawal process was not going to be easy, but that it would be worth it, and he would be better off. I was truly moved by how Jen cared for this patient and how she was living out the ICARE values within her practice.
