I am so appreciative of Katrina’s support of the department and staff during this challenging patient encounter.
Busy at baseline in the ED on this Friday evening EMS called in for ongoing rescue on a 31yo F who is 4 months pregnant in cardiac arrest.
Katrina did an excellent job communicating with staff and calling OB/NICU given some uncertainty of gestational age.
During ongoing resuscitation, she was able to actuate additional resources and manage the department when a Level 1 trauma activation arrived at the same time.
Though Katrina was a shining star as a charge nurse during this difficult shift, what I really want to recognize her for is after the patient time of death was called, I asked her if it would be possible to do a debrief with anyone involved that was interested. She responded immediately of course that she would find a way.
She then navigated an ongoing busy department, ensuring that pulling staff aside would not compromise patient care as well as contacting ancillary services (OB, security, RT, etc.) to invite them to the debrief. I am so appreciative of Katrina’s support of the department and staff during this challenging patient encounter. We could not have asked for a better leader and role model in the department!
