During my mother's stay at Tacoma General, she was most comfortable with Brendan. He was empathetic and had fun, meaningful conversations with her. He made her feel valued and loved. With him, she never felt alone. Brendan was often asking questions, which made her feel relevant.

As a Search and Rescue first responder, I know the value of engagement, not only because of the conversation itself and the benefits to a patient under stress but also the value of monitoring the mental status and being able to identify an altered mental state. Brendan was top-notch and the kind of person I'd want caring for me. When Brendan came into work after his days off, he was assigned to another floor, yet still stopped by my mother's room to say hello and expressed that he was sorry that she was still here. My mother lit up seeing him and was inspired for the day.

When I asked her about him, she said, "He's a fantastic nurse, who cares about his patients." My brother said, "He had a way of lifting her spirit." I personally say that individuals like Brendan reflect highly upon an organization. These special people should be recognized and valued for the comfort and care they bring to not only their patients and family.
