I know these are just simple gestures, but as a student nurse, I felt a deep sense of fulfillment when the relatives sincerely thanked me for what I did.
During my rotation in one of the public hospitals, I took care of a patient who was bedridden due to an accident. His body odor was quite evident as it was already a month from his last bath. I assessed the patient and found out that he had a fever. I took the initiative, with the approval of my clinical instructor, to perform priority nursing interventions on the patient and his S.O. I bathed the patient on his bed, clean the wounds, clipped his nails, and did health teachings to relatives on what to do regarding his condition. I know these are just simple gestures, but as a student nurse, I felt a deep sense of fulfillment when the relatives sincerely thanked me for what I did. The interventions I have done to the patient, as simple as bed bathing, feeding, and conversing with them during the health teachings comforted them in some ways.

With my clinical experiences, I now understand that a nursing student should not only possess the required skills and knowledge in the profession but also must have a compassionate heart willing to serve others selflessly and genuinely. The sweet smiles and thank you from the people I have taken care of, warm my heart, knowing that I did my part as a nursing student to treat and care for them with compassion.
