She came back on Sunday to tell the patient that his cat and birds were safe and that she gave the neighbor the key.
One Saturday, when we were working with Lely, she came to tell us that one of her patients, who has a disability, was really sad and crying. So we asked her why he was sad and she said the patient had been in the hospital for a while and he was scared that his cat and two birds would starve to death. According to what she told us, it sounded like they were the patient's only family so Lely asked if the patient had any family around that could feed his animals. He replied no. Usually, his neighbor takes care of his animals but the patient had the key with him in the hospital. Lely being the compassionate person she is, decided to help the patient. She told the patient she would help him so he would stop crying and assured him everything would be alright. As much as she is compassionate, she is also smart. She called the Warren Police to escort her into the patient’s house with another colleague. She asked for his key, and after work, she drove to his house with the police waiting for her. She went above her duty to help this patient to put a smile on his face. She came back on Sunday to tell the patient that his cat and birds were safe and that she gave the neighbor the key. The patient was overjoyed!!! I nominate Lely because she went above and beyond as an RN. She not only helped heal him physically but also mentally. She didn’t have to, but she did.

Lely is a brand new nurse. She was taking care of a patient who was sad and tearful that there was no one to feed his pets while he was inpatient and he was afraid they were going to die. Lely took it upon herself to reach out to the local police department and got them on standby as she went to the patient’s house and fed his animals. Lely nurses from the heart and her actions brought the patient comfort. I am proud to have her as one of our nurses!
