Sarah serves from a human-centered approach, getting to know each patient, understanding their unique needs, and spending time to make sure that their care, inpatient stay, and post-discharge are seamless.
My husband and I would like to make sure it's known that Sarah McIntosh has gone above and beyond to assist us during this past week. She called my husband a few times to check in. She was instrumental in helping us get out of Kansas City before a major storm hit. She has contacted me to check in, see if I have any questions, to make sure I know my next follow-up appointments, make sure my prescriptions were being taken care of, and even give me helpful suggestions, such as ice on my head. Anyway, we just wanted to make sure that people ahead of her do whatever they must not to let her go!!

The letter above is just one example of the exceptional care Sarah provides to each one of the patients that we care for in the Neurosurgery team. Sarah serves as a bridge between the ambulatory care that is provided and the patient's inpatient stay.

Sarah serves from a human-centered approach, getting to know each patient, understanding their unique needs, and spending time to make sure that their care, inpatient stay, and post-discharge are seamless. If a patient doesn't have the resources, Sarah will find the resources for the patient. If a patient doesn't understand care instructions, Sarah spends extra time educating the patient so that they understand.

During her tenure, Sarah has spent time building a compendium of patient education materials, bringing innovative approaches to completing patient education, and streamlining documentation in the EMR for providers and nurses to document this education. During the pandemic, Sarah found ways to ensure that she continued to be present and able to meet with, provide education, and ensure that patients had access to patient education, both in the hospital and when they discharged home.

In addition to her work with patients, Sarah’s kindness, team focus, thoughtful inquiry, and her humble approach to learning have made her a mainstay and invaluable part of the ambulatory, inpatient, perioperative, and post-acute teams. Her presence is highly valued by providers and nursing staff across all continuums of the care spectrum.

Note: This is Sarah's 2nd DAISY Award!
