We had a very young patient who came to us and was not doing well. She was very sick and the team was having a hard time figuring out why. She went from needing one device to being cannulated for ECMO the same day. The day following these events, both she and I were caring for this patient. At this point, there was still only speculation regarding what it was that caused our patient’s heart to fail. She recommended to the doctor that they run an autoimmune panel on this patient. Based on her knowledge, she shared her concern that the underlying issue was autoimmune-related. A few days later, the test came back positive for lupus. The patient was treated accordingly and was able to be decannulated from ECMO, weaned off another device, and extubated in the days following. I believe that if it wasn’t for this nurse’s push to advocate for our patient, we may not have seen her turn such a corner. To see the light in the family come back when their loved one started to improve was beautiful, and that can certainly be accredited to this nurse. She is a wonderful nurse who consistently goes above and beyond. She is so deserving of this award.
