Todd took extraordinary measures to fight for the patient's well-being, which impacted the well-being of the patient's family.
A patient's family member nominated Todd Jarens for going above and beyond to ensure their well-being. They described him as a "cape-wearing advocate" for his actions. Their 88-year-old father was being discharged due to insurance mandates because his recovery had plateaued. His family feared he wasn't strong enough, and when he arrived home, he fell out of the car and injured himself. An ambulance was called to take him to the St. Joe emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and knee and discharged. Two male nurses assisted in getting the patient into the car, one being Todd Jarens. Once situated, Todd asked about their plans for when they got home. The family didn't know what to do and told Todd they were informed their dad didn't meet the criteria for admission. Todd disagreed with this assessment and asked the family to wait a few minutes while he spoke with the discharge doctor.
Todd returned to the family with the news that their father was being admitted, which lifted a heavy burden on the family. Todd took extraordinary measures to fight for the patient's well-being, which impacted the well-being of the patient's family.
Todd, thank you for showing compassion toward your patient and his family. Thank you for collaborating with the rest of the care team to ensure the patient received the needed care. Thank you for being curious and inquiring about the patient's plans post-discharge, and thank you for having the courage to question the information the patient received.
