Patty not only brings this to her work every day, but she brings this to our community on a volunteer basis!
Patty has been an advocate by leading the medical tents for the Redbud for over 20 years. Patty assists with recruiting medical volunteers and has been successful in maintaining the loyalty of a core group of nurses and medical professionals over the years. She oversees the tent and all medical personnel, including providers.
She is accountable and dependable as she has taken the lead on this event for over 20 years and, despite retirement, is willing to continue to assist! Patty provides exceptional health care services to participants and workers at the Redbud event year after year delivering the healing presence of God.
Patty McKinney has been a nurse for over 32 years and a dedicated employee of SSM St. Anthony for 38 years! After dedicating many years to the nursing profession and to patients and their families, she decided to retire. However, her love and passion for patients, her team, and SSM couldn’t keep her away, and she is back to working PRN. She is intelligent, knowledgeable, and an extremely hard worker. She is enthusiastic and has been an active participant and leader of the Redbud Classic and has been instrumental in ensuring the success of both the race and the safety of those involved.
SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital has been the presenting sponsor of the Redbud Classic for 41 years. As part of our commitment to this event, we are responsible for the medical tent and serving any medical needs on the course for the bike events, including the 10-, 30- and 50-mile ride events and the 5K, 10K, 1-mile children’s run, 2-mile walk/stroller derby, and 1-mile woof walk. Patty has taken the lead for 20+ years and oversees the tent and all medical personnel, including providers. She has been passionate about this community service project and takes seriously her role to ensure that anyone needing medical attention receives it—participants and volunteers alike. Some years we are fortunate to have only minor needs (scrapes, falls, heat-related symptoms), while in others, the needs are greater, such as warmer days and caring for individuals who did not prepare for the race adequately. One year, Patty witnessed an individual who was having medical symptoms of a heart event. She acted quickly to assess the individual and called EMSA to transport him to the hospital. Even in her semi-retirement, she has agreed to help us continue to coordinate, as her knowledge and experience base are priceless.
Patty’s responsibilities as the lead of the medical tent include, but are not limited to:
1) Consulting on tent set up and location
2) Coordination on the day of the event with the Nichols Hills Fire Department for their staff to go out on the course with our nurses; she assigns each section of the course to ensure adequate coverage in case any participant goes down. Note that the course often changes, so she needs to assess those changes and plan accordingly.
3) For the bike events, coordination for the medical team to go on the course, following the participants, while she stays at the tent to coordinate all care needs by staying in constant contact with the team on the course.
4) Sources and transports all medical supplies, loading them and unloading them numerous times over the course of the events. She returns all unused supplies to purchasing, consistent with our value of stewardship.
5) Taking the initiative to spend the night before the race at a nearby hotel to ensure she is there before sunrise to coordinate all logistics for the event
6) Consulting on the needs for golf carts on the course, ice, sports drinks, and radios.
7) Advocates for changes with the Redbud, as warranted, to ensure continuous improvement based on past events
The DAISY Award was built upon the compassionate care that the Barnes family experienced from the nurses who cared for their son. Patty not only brings this to her work every day, but she brings this to our community on a volunteer basis! She has a bond between patients and those participating in the Redbud for such a great cause. She is a positive image of the nursing profession, she is dedicated to mentoring others and getting them involved in this wonderful event, she is a role model, and she is an advocate. We are so proud of the difference she has made and continues to make in the lives of others! She has made the world a better place, and we honor the work she has done! It is a privilege to have her on our team!
