She wiped her eyes and went back to that family and made sure her patient got to meet her baby because, unfortunately, it could be her only opportunity.
"Why do the bad things always happen to good people?" That's how my day started. Staring into the dark brown eyes of the RN, who knew any moment her patient would be experiencing the worst day of her life. She knew her day was going to be full of stress, walking on eggshells and praying for more time. We all want the best for our patients and work tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcome; this was no exception. We went in together; she comforted her patient as I told her I couldn't feel the cervix anymore and her 22-week daughter's feet were all I could feel. She did everything she was trained to do, while remaining calm and comforting the hysterical mama as the doctor called a STAT c-section. She circulated the section, did her PACU recovery, and transferred Mom to her new room, just like we all are trained to do. Then she cried as she told me the nurse who got her on the new unit was busy and might not be able to take her to the NICU to see her baby and asked if she could go back. She went back and took that mama to see her baby for the first time, probably the most memorable moment of her life. I know most nurses would try to accommodate this, if possible, but on this day with this patient, it just felt like a step above. After an unexpected delivery, sometimes it's hard to go above and beyond; we are exhausted both physically and mentally, but she wiped her eyes and went back to that family and made sure her patient got to meet her baby because, unfortunately, it could be her only opportunity.
I'm grateful to work with amazing women and Lily is no exception. When you need something whether it be spinning babies help, a shoulder to cry on, extra hands or a good laugh you can count on Lily to be there. You know she's bringing her knowledge, skills and her 3 sizes too big heart to the game every time without fail. You can count on Lily every time and this day I'm grateful our patient had Lily on her team.
