It doesn’t surprise me that she has gotten ten nominations because she is an amazing nurse, who a lot of our nurses look to. She’s kind of a guiding light in our department.
Surrounded by her colleagues, Kim Kachel, lead nurse for the Hematology/Oncology Department on SSM Health Dean Medical Group’s South Madison Campus, was surprised with a DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Kim said she had no idea she would be receiving an award, “I was told that we were going on a field trip, and I’m always up for that,” she said with a smile. “I admit I like being in the center of attention, but not being the center of attention like this.”
The DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes nurses who have a distinguished career with a demonstrated lifetime of service to patients, the nursing profession and the broader community. In presenting Kim with her award, the Wisconsin Regional Vice President for Ambulatory Services shared some of the comments made by those who nominated her for the award, "Kim serves as a role model and unit coach for care excellence, owning problems and following through until effective resolution is reached. She routinely assists with the coordination of complex oncology patient care to ensure everything falls into place and ensures patients have a seamless care experience. She is resolute and purposeful in the face of competing priorities and tasks. She is an approachable resource for peers and leadership alike, identifying missed opportunities and providing regular, direct feedback to co-workers. She often trains new charge RNs, sharing her experience and knowledge to grow future oncology nurses.”
Kim also was lauded for her help in creating a virtual triage system for oncology nurses, giving them an opportunity to work-from-home. She also was credited for drafting standard operating procedures used across the department, and selflessly extending a helping hand whenever needed and sharing her extensive knowledge of oncology treatments.
Kim’s supervisor said, “It doesn’t surprise me that she has gotten ten nominations because she is an amazing nurse, who a lot of our nurses look to. She’s kind of a guiding light in our department.”
When presented with her award, Kim thanked her teammates for their support over her nearly 33 years with SSM Health. “This team is just wonderful,” Kim said. “It’s because of them and our patients that I am able to pursue my life’s passion. Everybody works closely together. They all are so compassionate, and we have sincere, genuine friendships inside and outside of work. We have a stressful job so it is important that we have cohesiveness.”
Congratulations Kim! We applaud your devotion to a lifetime of exceptional patient care! Thank you for your commitment to innovative excellence and mentorship of a new generation of compassionate caregivers.
