My father was brought into the ICU with severe injuries following a motorcycle accident. He was a patient there for twelve days and this nurse was his nurse the night before my father passed away. Throughout those twelve days, my father was critical, but seemed to be making very small improvements as the days went on. I was the only family that was able to be there during that time, which made this experience that much more overwhelming and difficult and coming from a family with no medical background, it felt impossible to understand and process everything that was going on with my father. This nurse seemed to completely understand what I needed without even asking. She sat with me and patiently talked me through everything that was happening as my father was declining. She explained what each of the monitors was showing and talked me through the ventilator and the delicate balance of medications that they needed to give him. She treated my father with such care, and made it abundantly clear how passionate she is about her role in her patients’ lives. She stood out, went so above and beyond, and made such a lasting impression. My family could not be more grateful for the care she provided and the compassion she showed.
