In a world where kindness and understanding are sometimes in short supply, Nurse Martin stands as a shining example of what it truly means to care for others.
In a world where compassion and dedication are often underrated, there shines a beacon of light in the form of Mrs. Lindsay Martin, a school nurse whose unwavering commitment to her students, especially those with severe handicaps, is nothing short of extraordinary.
Mrs. Martin serves as the school nurse at Farnsworth School in Chicago Public Schools, as well as several other schools within the northside of Chicago. We are a school where special needs, diversity, and inclusion are celebrated. Among the students she cares for are several who face profound physical and severe cognitive challenges. These children require not just medical attention but also a level of understanding and patience that goes beyond the ordinary.
One such student is D, a young boy with a seizure disorder in conjunction with multiple disorders such as scoliosis, muscular hypertonicity, spastic quadriparesis, cerebral palsy, periventricular leukomalacia necrotizing enterocolitis with hip dislocations, and bone fractures.
Before enrolling in our school program, Nurse Martin went above and beyond and visited the state facility that D calls home to coordinate with the caretakers. D's days are filled with challenges, given his limited mobility and communication abilities, but Mrs. Martin has become his steadfast ally and advocate. She ensures that his medical needs are met with precision and care, but it's her unwavering support of the classroom teacher and paraprofessionals and genuine affection that truly make a difference in D's life.
But Nurse Martin’s dedication extends far beyond D and the students in our Severe/Profound specialized classroom. She works tirelessly to ensure that every child with special needs receives the care and attention they deserve. From coordinating with therapists and caregivers to providing training for school staff, to maintaining all of the compliances with Individualized Educational Plans, she is a driving force behind the school's efforts to create an inclusive environment for all students.
It is with great humility and admiration that I nominate Mrs. Lindsay Martin for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Her unwavering dedication to her students, especially those with severe handicaps, is a testament to her compassionate heart and exceptional professionalism.
