It is with great pleasure that we nominate Janet Martinez for the prestigious DAISY Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to nursing at NYP Westchester. Janet has devoted an impressive 35 years of service to the field of nursing, spending the majority of her career caring for pediatric patients.

Janet’s dedication and commitment to excellence are evident in her involvement in numerous committees and councils at our hospital. She is an integral part of our Professional Shared Governance Recorder, Evidence-Based Practice Research Council, Quality Council, Nursing Information Team, and the Reward, Recognition, Retention, and Respect Committee. Her active participation in these groups showcases her passion for advancing nursing practice and improving patient care outcomes.

As a member of the pediatric night staff, Janet consistently demonstrates her unwavering dedication to her profession. She is a true team player, always willing to lend a helping hand and support her colleagues. Janet has been instrumental in leading various projects for postpartum and pediatrics, including the development of our Pediatric Vision Board, creating informative PowerPoint presentations for pediatric initiatives, and updating our pediatric admission booklet to enhance the experience for our young patients and their families.

Janet’s enthusiasm for professional development is contagious as she motivates and encourages her fellow colleagues on our Magnet journey and advocates for educational advancements and certifications. Additionally, she takes the initiative to organize outside activities and gatherings to foster camaraderie among our team members, creating a positive and supportive work environment.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Janet goes above and beyond by volunteering for activities that promote self-care for nurses, coordinate Nurse Week celebrations, and enhance employee engagement initiatives. Her efforts contribute to creating a vibrant and inclusive workplace culture that values the well-being of all staff members. Janet’s professionalism, compassion, and expertise make her an invaluable asset to our team. She consistently provides high-quality care and serves as a knowledgeable educator for her patients and their families. Her thoughtful nature is exemplified by her ability to remember and acknowledge important events in the lives of her colleagues, fostering a sense of community and appreciation within our department.

One particular instance that highlights Janet’s exceptional qualities as a team player and encourager occurred during the most recent Nurses Week celebration on May 12th. Janet made sure that the outstanding member of our team was recognized for her professionalism and skill. She nominated a colleague who subsequently won the Excellent Nursing Award. Janet’s selfless act of recognizing and uplifting her colleague underscores her dedication to fostering a supportive and encouraging work environment.

It is time to recognize and appreciate Janet for who she is and her significant contributions to making our unit, colleagues, and the families we care for a place we can be proud of. In conclusion, Janet Martinez is a shining example of excellence in nursing. Her tireless dedication, positive spirit, and unwavering commitment to patient care and staff well-being make her a truly exceptional nurse and colleague.

On one occasion, Janet was a comforting presence for a child experiencing difficulty breathing while the other nurse promptly alerted the doctor. Her compassion and expertise provided invaluable support to the patient and their family during that critical moment. The nurse assigned to the patient felt reassured by Janet's presence and competence.

Janet is truly an asset to our unit as a certified bilingual (Spanish) interpreter. For families who speak only Spanish, the experience of having their child admitted to the hospital can be incredibly frightening and overwhelming. Janet's ability to communicate fluently in Spanish, explain the care plan thoroughly, and offer reassurance plays a vital role in alleviating their anxiety. Knowing someone is there to listen attentively and address their questions and concerns makes a significant difference.
