As the patient's family was in the midst of grief, he was in it with them without trying to ‘fix’ their grief.
Phil consistently shows love of his work in how he interacts with his coworkers and his patients. Specifically, I saw him show kindness and tenderness to a patient who was dying. This patient had great family support but also had some complicated medical/social aspects to their situation. Phil talked to the patient and told him all that he was doing, even though he was unconscious. Phil would say, “I’m going to get you cleaned up for your family,” and “Hey, I’m going to [insert medical phrase]”. As the patient's family was in the midst of grief, he was in it with them without trying to ‘fix’ their grief. Phil sought out answers to their questions and made sure they had the space and time prior to the terminal extubation. Through this, Phil made sure they knew what was happening. Phil doesn’t throw medical jargon at his patients. He makes sure they know what is actually happening. Phil always seems to be enjoying what he is doing. He somehow makes charting and phone calls look enjoyable. I believe that is what happens when someone has a deep love and passion for what they do.
